Before this class I didn't use many different websites. I was a member of facebook and myspace. I had my personal yahoo email, my ysu email and my work email only to check. I have my ysu email sent to my yahoo account so that I don't have to constantly check both. It wasn't too hard to juggle these resources. However, now with so many different resources it has become a little tougher.

Like everybody else, before this class i wasn't very involved with social networking softwares or web-based word processors, but now i try to organize all my links, user names and passwords in order to keep track of everything. I created a spreadsheet and everytime i join a website, i update my list and print it. This made it little easier and comes handy when working on Learning Units.

My management of information resources is. I use my YSU email for my professional activity. Gmail for my online purchases and yahoo for banking and domestic accounts. I get my notification emails from social networking sites to both yahoo as well as gmail. I chat a little bit in gmail with friends online while I chech my emails. After taking this course I am also checking facebook every day, in which I can see the friendfeed where I also can view mine and friends activity on social bookmarking sites.

One thing that I very recently started to use was Thunderbird (comparable to Outlook). I this allows me to look at all of my different email accounts at the same time. Also, I can single out any one acct and read email to that particular acct. This def. saves me time with signing in and out three different times.

The more I thought about this, I think for me, this becomes a seasonal thing. In the fall and winter, I have quite a lot of time to devote to keeping up with what is going on and monitoring all the different news sites. Since the weather has started to break and I find myself trying to get a 4 or 5 mile jog in after work, I am trying to somewhat keep up with the current events a different way. I still check my e-mail at home and via Blackberry, but for news and current events, I am trying to simply use Google Feed Reader while checking my gmail and killing two birds with one stone (kind of). So far, I have been doing this for 3 weeks or so and have found it pretty successful.

One more quick thought. Although my personal internet activities are manageable, I am struggling to keep up with all the websites for this course. In order to manage and keep track of them, I am using bookmarks and other options with firefox. I use topic specific bookmark folders in firefox to keep them organized and easily accessible. I still struggle with some sites, but I think it's more of a memory thing than an organization thing.

In managing all of the resources that I use on the net, I use a series of programs. And to manage these programs, I use the FireFox toolbar bookmarks.

For email, I mostly use Gmail - but sometimes I will use AOL. Recently, using Gmail for all of my email has become a problem. My mailbox has become over loaded with daily emails, and sorting, reading and responding has become a daunting task - esp if i miss a day of checking.
In keeping up with my friends - esp distant ones - I use myspace. Here, I can keep all of my personal / friend / short message stuff in one spot. It's very convenient.
As for finance stuff, grades, and a few other things that I use almost on a daily basis, I use a bookmark toolbar in FireFox. Since I use these sites daily, short cut buttons are readily available every time I open a browser.
For my news, I visit cnn.com and foxnews.com. I don't receive any kinds of feeds or updates.
Before this course, I didn't participate in blogging. And for short communications with immediate friends, I use my cell phone.
I suppose I dont use the internet as much as other. I have several websites that I visit often and I rarely search for new ones. Most of my social interactions either occur through person to person or via my cell phone. I'm not suggesting that it's a small task to keep my internet activities together and well managed, but I don't really have too too much to manage.

Before I started this semester I was using Gmail for professional correspondence, and my yahoo account for friends, family and websites. I would check my email two or three times a day, each account individually. I also had an account on Facebook to keep track of friends from school, which at the time I would check once a day for messages and other social information. I also used the internet to keep track of certain publications and even a few web comics. I would usually check these after my mail in the mornings.

Since I've started this class I've consolidated everything into Google's home page using several helpful widgets. I've connected all of the random web pages that I check for updates into an RSS feed which is linked to a Google widget, along with two other widgets to connect to my e-mail accounts. Now when I log into my Google account I have immediate access to all of my new mail and the option to view any new articles or posts among the blogs, comics and articles of which I am a fan. I've even gone so far as to add a Facebook widget to Firefox so I don't even have to log into the site to check messages.

A nice little bonus that I hadn't considered when I started consolidating all of my interests was the ability to access all of these sites anywhere. I didn't need to keep track of all the sites through my bookmarks, and could check everything from any computer.

Before taking this class, I used aol and msn hotmail for any email notification. I usually would look at my emails once I got into work in the morning, once at lunch and ~ 15 minutes before I left for home. I also would check my investments during this time as well. I try not to look at much once I get home because I work 10 hour days with an hour and 15 minute drive (one way) each day.I try to reserve this time for my wife and kids. On the weekends I have more time to look and research different things such as sports information, investment information and religious information.

I never used blogs or any other "social newtworking" programs before this course. This class has been a bit overwhelming for me because of all of the new information with trying to become proficient at using these sites to my benefit. I feel that I don't have the time to "master" most of these programs. It is becoming even more difficult because this time of the year I am out of the office in the field and do not have as much access to the internet as I would like. I do have a laptop and that helps. However, I cannot find an open network to get online as often as I would like. I now have to manage my time during the evenings to try to keep up with this class and other responsibilities that I need to keep up on. I am now trying to use only a handful of the programs we have signed up for. Ones that I feel will help me at work.
