I would be able to contribute after April 10, 2008. Currently too busy putting together the earlier knowledge resource management for SMEs and insurance education.

Before the start of this course, I used only one method to manage my information needs. I used to only use AOL for email and to catch up on local and world news. I guess I liked the ease of one point of contact to minimize my efforts. Now that I realize the differences of other methods, I'm starting to like other program more than AOL. I really like InfotechTools becuase it's like an all-in-one program. I also use AOL to receive updates from my InfotechTools account which is really convenient being that it gets received on my blackberry. I think I'm addicted to Linkin now becuase I can get most updates from what is going on in the specialty chemical industry which helps me stay connect at work. It's nice now that I'm the one starting conversation at work about what our company is doing compared to others. I usually check my internet several times a daily but usually don't response until late evening. I find great value in this course and expanding beyond my old routine.

I break my management up into little chunks. I typically devote the mornings to catching on world news through a few select websites. During lunch time, I again catch up on current world events and do some research on what is interesting to me that particular day. I reserve the evenings to checking e-mail and keeping in contact with people via yahoo, google, and twitter. The weekends are when I go through and check all other communication mediums. I have found it quite useful to keep an excel spread sheet with the website name, hyper link, user name, and password. This makes it so much easier to quickly check everything. (I am not a fan of having the website remembering my computer.) This has worked pretty good so far, but I am always trying to get things done quicker and more effectively. I think as soon as the cell phone networks get faster and more reliable, I will do most of my information management via my Blackberry. Currently, I only use it for e-mail and GPS support.

Before Info Tech Tools, I wasn managing about 15 emails a day from on-campus activiity boards that I am serving on, business with my staff, YSU updates, facebook information, and an occasional myspace. Right now, with the addition of the many applications that we are using, I get about 30 to 35 mails a day. The question that was posed was how do I manage it all. Since my directory info at ysu lists my email on the my.ysu.edu account, I HAVE to use that one because of the nature of my job. I have a gmail account that I am slowly switching my personal mail to because I am graduating in the near future. I go through my mail one at a time and answer the most pertenaint ones first. By the time I get done with business work, I either have class, dinner, a meeting, or an event that I HAVE to go to. Therefore, I don't get to my school work till later at night or weekends. I also use internet explorer to organize all our websites via the favorites folder. Any site that I have subscribed to or page that I have created is listed in the Info Tech Tools favorites folder. I have also unfortunatly stored my passwords for easy fast access to sites. I don't like storing passwords for fear of hacking or viruses but with all the info that we use, it is convenient. I don't check every site daily, I find it hard to keep up with every post because many of them are irrevalent. I do try to find some interesting sites or something that is funny. The funny sites take the edge off the classwork. At any rate, I manage my email and sites one at a time and get done with my work when I can without jeopardizing my sleep schedule.

Question

Dr Alam

I like to see your profile and learn how you are managing these all application and rss feeding. But when i try to view your profile, Because of a large number of different applications in your profile, its really hard to load your profile and view in the computer. I think, its more than hard to be loaded your profile in slow-speed connections.

For one thing a broadband connection is a must to effectively use the course material in this class. I made that very clear in the course outline. I would like to design this course someday for mobile phone delivery but that is not what I am doing right now.

I do not solely rely on facebook as a my information source and communication. In fact I have been actively on it only for last 1 and a half month. It is promising but I am not going to make it the main application. I know most of you opted for facebook in your LU8.

I think all these sites offer multiple solutions to multiple problems we have. One has to pick the right tool for the job. Try bringing people from LInkedin on myspace and you will know what I am trying to say here. The only reason I chose facebook is because it is mid way between linkedin and myspace/hi5 and it has the largest number of college students.

If you want to know what I use on a daily basis here is a list in order of how I scan through all of them

1. Gmail allows me to keep track of what goes in infotechtools.ning.com through e-mail notification
2. cc.ysu.edu e-mail to keep track of facebook through e-mail notification
For my own information

I read blogs through Google reader. I subscribe to a very large number blogs through their rss feed in the area of news/finance/internet/neuroscience and many others. If you want I can post my OPML here.

I also spend some time on friendfeed.com and twitter.com

Once a while I check my ysu.edu e-mail but not very often

It shows that I am not dependent on one source. It is hard to keep track of all this but on Internet information sources appear and and disappear therefore, it is not a good idea to rely on one.

I hope this answers your question. Lets have a discussion here. Post your opinion about how you manage your own information needs?
