Information Technology Tools

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I’ve never used Facebook before this course. By researching Facebook capabilities, I noticed a lot of useful tools offered by this program. One of them is certainly MyOffice application. My group created a project called ENGR6923 Group1, so we are now able to communicate among each other in order to fulfill our group assignments. MyOffice lets us to discuss ideas related to the specific topic, as well as to share files, organize events, create to-do lists and also to track who is responsible for the specific part of the assignment.

Google Calendar left a positive impression on me. Generally, I like all other Google applications, including Gmail, Google Talk and Google Docs. Google Calendar allows users to create a calendar and to share it with specified people. There is also an option of making calendar visible to the public. I will definitely use this application in the future, since it gives me possibility to track all my events. I would also mention the notification feature, both email and phone, especially since users can choose when to be notified about upcoming events (in the range of 5 minutes to 1 week). Also, when the group of students is collaborating and managing the same project, Google Calendar is a very useful tool to schedule meetings and organize a working schedule.

Zoho Project seems to have very interesting tools. It allows creating tasks, working with calendars, exporting pending, closed and archived tasks to other users, etc. There is also a calendar, which can be used for tracking activities; a meeting tool for scheduling meetings and conferences, and a lot of other useful features.

Yugma is an interesting online conferencing tool. Offered features are desktop sharing, annotation tools and whiteboarding, which all enable members of the group to easily collaborate and communicate. Zoho Meeting has similar features, and also offers possibility of collaboration among group members trough online meeting and desktop sharing, as well as the possibility for performing remote troubleshooting. Yugma has a free trial, so one can get familiar with it and eventually choose to buy it. I checked the prices and found that it is not as expensive as some professional programs, so it is affordable for average user and can be very good to use within the small group.

One of the programs of similar nature that is commonly used in the business world is GoToMeeting by Citrix Systems, Inc. The web address is http://www1.gotomeeting.com . It requires monthly/yearly subscription (license) and is more expensive then Yugma.
