Hello Dr. Alam, thank you for the welcome message. I am still exploring the potential of this one and you other blogs. You are sharing ample information on diverse topics beside your online video lectures. Really interesting.
During my M.S. research, I was fascinated by one of the topics called Cognitive Psychology. Read few books on it.
Also, I read your paper and other articles on neuroscience that you posted on your blogs. Feeling happy to be a part of your knowledge sharing network and your student.
I agree about the restrictions in the LMS inasmuch as it can funnel staff down one pedagogical path. Unfortunately, that path often equates to the transmission model of teaching.
I think that the difficulty that many institutions have in using public sites is that the institutions are risk averse and they are not prepared to analyse and understand what the actual risk is compared to the perceived risk (see the Al Upton saga). I know that many people just go out and use whatever tools they see fit without bringing it to the attention of their administrators. I wonder at what point we need to make admins aware that users don't want to be locked into one model, to one LMS so that it becomes incumbent upon institutions to enable their systems to work with open systems? I found this document from Edinburgh University quite interesting in terms of using Web2.0 applications not hosted by the university.
Thanks very much for the invite to have a look at this site and for your welcome message. I must apologise for being so tardy in replying.
It's quite impressive what you have put together. I'd be interested to know what resistance, if any, was encountered in using this model. Particularly institutional aversion to having students work on a public site and also the Open Professor model.
I just wanted to ask you a question. I registered for your ENGR 6924 course for this summer. I saw on the YSU website that only 3 students registered by now. So, I was wondering if you are going to hold the course?
I didn't have a write up for part 2 of LU10 because the task never said to write anything up about it. I can add this if needed but I didn't know we had to do this.
When I am logged into the project I see you as a member with both your gmail account and yahoo account. I was confused what you were asking about earlier because you made the comment on an unrelated blog entry of mine.
What are we missing on ZOHO project? I didn't know we were supposed to do anything for ZOHO project for assignment 10, or are you talking about something from the past?
just a side comment. In looking at 5 different social networks, I think it's weird that we didn't include the currently most popular one of all, MySpace.
quick question about the combined effort documents: when we write, do we identify the parts that we wrote? or.... I guess my question is, how will you know who wrote what and who participated in the document writing?
I added my link to del.icio.us to my wordpress page. It was already a widget on the right side of the page. I added my freewebs and wordpress page to my list on pownce. Is there anything else I need to add?
Thanks for asking. I am still formulating my proposal. But I am interested in the connections between being able to visualize abstract concepts (there are many ways to do that but I am focusing on technology - especially web 2.0 tools) and ownership of content and the learning environment.
Due to the misunderstanding, I wasn't aware that I needed to post the links on my blog. I posted all of the links you asked for on my wordpress blog now. Thank you!
YSU has switched to the Banner system. It is JAVA based system and IMHO JAVA is a resource hog. As a result when companies sell their java based programs they under report the hardware requirements. In fact the companies who are pushing JAVA are IBM,Sun and HP and most of the JAVA based software they sell now is free. Any body can download it except few key financial modules. Like the portal in YSU Banner system is from uportal IBM, SUN and HP make money in selling expensive beefed up servers. So it is in their best interest that they give the software for free or open source it so that people can get used to it and once they put the software in production run they quickly find out that they need a 3 to 4 quad processor server with 8-16 gb memory to get any reasonable performance out of their implementation of software that was running just fine when they did the trial run with few users. They rush and buy all the expensive hardware they can afford to get the system working decently. It is a good strategy for these companies but it is very hard on the people who get caught in the net.
I was a big fan of java few years ago. I rented a dedicated server to run some java based applications. Then I found out the real cost of running java programs at the back end of a web server. They are good programs but they need lot of hardware to provide reasonable performance.
I think YSU probably is facing the similar problem I just mentioned. Since you can not get an access to the system I think you should file a complain with YSU help desk at http://helpdesk.ysu.edu/ or call at 330-941-1595 and explain your difficulty in getting into the system.
For paper schedule I am not sure where you can get. I have not seen one for this semester.
YSU web site basically takes me on a easter egg hunt and still I can not find the class roster. I have seen it on the my.ysu.edu page a while ago but I can not find it now. If you search for class roster you will get everything except the class roster.
Your best bet is to call your department and explain them your difficulty in registration and I am sure they will find some way to help you out.
Not related to this class, but do you know anything about the new way that YSU has the class schedules set up on the internet? I have been trying to view the class offerings, but it takes forever to load, and my computer times out. Even at work, I try loading the application, but to result. Do you know anything about this? Is there anywhere I can pick up a paper copy of the schedule of classes for summer? This has been giving me problems all week, and I cannot figure out how to view the schedule. Any insight would be appreciated; thanks.
